We already knew that Google Play Music was being prepared for the grave with a new service replacing it. Back in April 2018, we reported “YouTube Remix” would replace Google Play Music eventually. YouTube Remix ended up becoming YouTube Music and is now officially replacing Google Play Music on Android devices.

If you’ve ever purchased an Android device you know that most of them come with pre-installed Google apps. One of those apps has always been GPM but that ends now. YTM will now be bundled in its place on all upcoming Android 10 devices. But that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to use the old service and app.

“Google Play Music listeners with new Android 10 devices can continue to enjoy Google Play Music by downloading it from the Play Store and logging into their accounts,” YouTube Music product manager Brandon Bilinski wrote in a blog post.

Since the launch of YouTube Music, Google has said the service will ultimately replace Google Play Music as its one and only subscription music platform. But the company has lagged in bringing over user uploads and libraries from GPM to YouTube Music, and people are unwilling to make the switch until that migration has proven successful. Every time there’s news about YouTube Music, I ask the company for a progress update, and I usually get some form of “still working on it” in response.

Eventually, GPM will fall away completely and YTM will be the only music app offered by Google. The company offers YouTube Premium which bundles YTM with an ad-free YouTube experience. Many users have taken advantage of this service as they believe it is worth it to remove ads from YT. Personally, I use YT a lot and have found the Premium service worth the time savings in skipping and watching ads.
